Flowers for the Saints
Flowers for the Saints are offerings to my grandmothers. Although I never met them, they both worked as seamstresses in the Cuban countryside. I am fascinated by their relationship to textiles, their beliefs, and their story as opposed to my own. Through the weaving process, I am interested in exploring the role and definition of textiles in our world, focusing on the woven plane as a second skin, a weather-protective and complex reconfiguration of material, ideas, and memories. This ongoing series explores the use of textiles for personal protection and expression, as well as their relationship to our bodies and the spaces we occupy.
Some of the materials used include: paper yarn, twine, burlap, natural and synthetic fibers, beaded string, discarded textiles and wire.
